Why this course

Level II is for practitioners with a foundation in coastal management who need to develop and assess coastal evidence, compare management options or work through a practical problem.

Three days in Byron Bay, combining advanced coastal methods, applied work and a full coastal field day along the Tweed–Byron coast.

  • Alumni of Level I, in any year
  • Alumni of the Coastal Hazard Management Short Course (2013–2018)
  • Experienced coastal engineers and scientists
  • Experienced coastal managers in local and state government
  • State agency staff assessing coastal works, managing or protecting coastal assets

Level II builds on foundational coastal knowledge. If you have equivalent professional experience, contact us to discuss whether the course is a good fit.

What you will be able to do

  1. Interpret probabilistic coastal hazard assessment and its planning implications
  2. Analyse sediment budgets, bypassing and entrance behaviour as management problems
  3. Appraise adaptation options using economic and multi-criteria methods
  4. Design engagement that includes Traditional Owners and affected communities from the outset
  5. Develop and test a prototype or workflow for a coastal problem using methods and tools introduced through the Apter AI Lab

  1. Day 1

    Advanced coastal processes and management

    Deeper into the physics and the management problems they create, with Byron Bay as the live case.

    • Waves, tides, sediment transport and sand bypassing
    • Storm surge modelling
    • Coastal entrances, openings and lagoons
    • Coastal management in Byron Bay
    • AI applications for coastal resilience
    • Field-day briefing and the first part of the Apter AI Lab: define a coastal problem and explore a practical approach

  2. Day 2

    Field study of the Tweed–Byron coast

    Examine coastal processes, exposed assets and management responses along the Tweed–Byron coast. The final itinerary and contributors will be confirmed before the course.

    • Beach and dune dynamics at Byron Bay
    • An eroding spit and the assets on it
    • Flood management, dunes and beach scraping
    • A foreshore seawall and what it protects
    • Sand bypassing at the river mouth

    In person only. Lunch is in the field.

  3. Day 3

    Evidence, economics and your case

    The methods that make a coastal case defensible, then the case itself.

    • Managing shifting sands
    • From deterministic to probabilistic coastal hazard assessment
    • Economics for coastal resilience management
    • Coastal management around the world
    • Indigenous engagement
    • Second part of the Apter AI Lab: develop and test a prototype addressing a practical coastal problem

Questions

Do I need to have done Level I?
Level II assumes the foundations. Level I in any year, or the Coastal Hazard Management Short Course that ran from 2013 to 2018, is the usual route in. If you have equivalent experience, contact us and we can discuss whether Level II is the right fit.
Can I register for the Level I and Level II pathway?
Yes. Register for both courses through the Level I page using the combined pathway option. The pathway is available in person only.
What does a live-stream seat include?
Days 1 and 3 as they run, course materials and available session recordings, and a certificate stating 12 structured learning hours. Day 2 is in the field and is not streamed.
Do I keep the materials after the course?
Yes. Your course space on learn.apter.au includes slides, readings and available session recordings. Access is time-limited; the access dates are provided in your course invitation.
Can my organisation pay by invoice or purchase order?
Yes. Pay by card at checkout, or use the purchase order request page and we will raise a tax invoice. Finance teams that prefer email can write to admin@apter.au. A tax invoice is provided either way, and there is no booking fee.
How does the group rate work?
Three or more people from one organisation registering for the same course can use the group rate. It is calculated as 5% off the current early-bird or standard price, then rounded down to the nearest $5. Select the group option for each eligible participant. It applies to in-person and live-stream places where offered, but cannot be combined with pathway pricing or another discount.
What if I cannot attend after registering?
Contact admin@apter.au as soon as you know. A suitable colleague can usually take your place at no additional cost if you notify us before the course starts. Under our terms, cancellations more than 21 days before the course may receive a refund less non-recoverable fees or committed costs. Between 8 and 21 days, a transfer or credit may be offered, but a refund is not guaranteed. Refunds are generally unavailable within 7 days. Please read the full cancellation terms at www.apter.au/terms.
What if Apter postpones or cancels the course?
Every course runs subject to minimum enrolment. If Apter postpones or cancels, you choose a full refund or a transfer to the next course. Please wait until we confirm in writing that the course will proceed before booking non-refundable travel or accommodation.
Do I get a certificate?
Yes. After the course you receive a Certificate of Completion with a credential ID and a permanent verification link on apter.au, which you can add to LinkedIn from the email. It states 22 structured learning hours in person, or 12 by live stream. Your professional body determines whether and how these hours count towards its CPD requirements.

The course is based at the Byron Bay Surf Life Saving Club.
