Join all three days in Brisbane, including:

Live stream

  • Join the teaching sessions on Days 1 and 3 as they take place, including the corporate reporting and AI introductions, with access to course materials.
  • The Day 2 adaptation field day is available to in-person participants only and will not be streamed.

Why this course

Climate change affects the assets organisations manage, the services they provide and the decisions they make about their future. Responding requires an understanding of the risks, the available adaptation options and the consequences of acting at different times.

This course connects climate science with the practical responsibilities of government and business. You will explore how climate information informs planning, operations, investment and governance, and how to develop adaptation responses suited to your organisation.

For businesses, this includes understanding the climate risks and opportunities that matter financially, assessing organisational resilience and developing the evidence needed for corporate reporting. For government, it includes decisions about public assets, services, communities and long-term investment.

You will also be introduced to how artificial intelligence and machine learning can support climate-risk and adaptation work, with practical examples and guidance on evaluating their outputs.

Across three days, you will build a common foundation, examine real adaptation decisions in the field and apply what you learn to a case relevant to your work.

The course is designed for professionals whose work involves decisions affected by climate risk, including:

  • Local and state government: staff working in climate adaptation, planning, infrastructure, asset management, sustainability and community resilience.
  • Infrastructure owners and utilities: professionals responsible for assets, networks, service continuity and long-term investment.
  • Corporate risk, sustainability, finance and governance teams: people preparing for climate-related financial reporting, supporting board oversight or integrating climate risk into business strategy.
  • Business operations, asset and supply-chain teams: professionals assessing impacts on facilities, suppliers, customers, business continuity and capital expenditure.
  • Consultants and advisers: engineering, environmental, climate and risk practitioners supporting clients with assessment, adaptation and reporting.
  • Researchers and specialists: people connecting climate knowledge with policy, planning and implementation.

Participants share a common framework while exploring the different responsibilities, priorities and constraints of their organisations. The course is accessible to professionals without a specialist climate or AI background.

What you will be able to do

By the end of the course, you will be better able to:

  1. Interpret climate information, projections and scenarios, including their uncertainties and limitations.
  2. Identify climate hazards, exposure and vulnerability across assets, services, communities, operations and value chains.
  3. Assess consequences, including compound and cascading impacts, and explain their organisational and financial significance.
  4. Understand how scenario analysis helps assess resilience and inform adaptation choices.
  5. Develop and compare adaptation options, considering trade-offs, co-benefits and implementation constraints.
  6. Understand adaptation pathways, including how options can be sequenced and reviewed as conditions change.
  7. Connect climate-risk assessment with governance, investment, corporate reporting, metrics and monitoring.
  8. Recognise practical applications of AI and machine learning, and assess the evidence, limitations and human review they require.
  9. Communicate a climate-risk problem, potential responses and a practical next step.

What you take back

During the course, you will develop a working Climate Risk and Adaptation Decision Brief to organise your thinking around a real case. The brief brings together:

  • The problem, system and decision.
  • Priority hazards, exposure and vulnerability.
  • Consequences and why they matter.
  • Financial or service implications, where relevant.
  • Potential adaptation options and key trade-offs.
  • An indicative pathway or next decision.
  • Responsibilities, evidence gaps and monitoring needs.
  • A practical next action.

Corporate participants can use the brief to identify information needed for internal risk management, investment discussions and climate reporting. Government participants can use it to support planning, asset management and adaptation discussions.

You will also take back course materials, a framework for discussing climate risk across professional disciplines, an understanding of where AI may assist your work, and a Certificate of Completion with a permanent verification link.

The brief is a starting point for further work and discussion within your organisation.

Programme

  1. Day 1

    Understanding climate risk

    Build a common foundation in climate risk and connect it to a situation relevant to your organisation. Topics include:

    • Observed and projected climate change.
    • Climate hazards, scenarios and uncertainty.
    • Physical risks, transition risks and climate-related opportunities.
    • Exposure, vulnerability and consequences.
    • Multi-hazard, compound and cascading impacts.
    • Service criticality, financial materiality and affected stakeholders.
    • Governance, responsibilities and decision ownership.
    • An introduction to Australia's climate-reporting framework and AASB S2.
    • An introduction to AI, machine learning and their applications in climate-risk work.

    Examples will connect these concepts with public services, infrastructure, business operations and investment decisions. Corporate examples will explore how climate impacts can translate into disruption, changing costs, revenue effects and investment needs.

  2. Day 2

    Adaptation field day

    Examine how climate risk and adaptation are being addressed in practice. Through field-based learning, explore the relationship between climate evidence, exposed systems, adaptation options and the decisions involved in implementation. Questions include:

    • What risk was being addressed?
    • What evidence informed the decision?
    • Which options were considered, and why was a particular response chosen?
    • What trade-offs and constraints shaped the outcome?
    • Who was responsible for funding and implementation?
    • How did the response affect service continuity, operational resilience or investment priorities?
    • What residual risk remains, and how is performance monitored?

    The field programme will draw on examples relevant to the wider climate-risk landscape, which may include flooding, urban heat, water, built assets and critical infrastructure. In person only. Field sites and hosts will be announced once confirmed.

  3. Day 3

    From risk to adaptation

    Apply the first two days to the choices organisations face when planning and implementing adaptation. Topics include:

    • Developing adaptation options.
    • Comparing trade-offs, costs and co-benefits.
    • Adaptation pathways, sequencing, thresholds and trigger points.
    • Using scenarios to explore organisational resilience.
    • Governance, investment, funding and implementation.
    • The relationship between adaptation, emissions reduction and transition planning.
    • An introduction to climate metrics and targets, including Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions.
    • Residual risk, monitoring and review.
    • Evidence, assumptions and documentation for organisational decisions and reporting.
    • Practical demonstrations of AI-assisted climate-risk and adaptation workflows.

    You will work on a case relevant to your organisation, drawing on discussion and perspectives from across the group. Corporate participants can explore the implications for business resilience and reporting, while government participants can focus on public assets, services and community outcomes.

Corporate climate reporting and governance

The course introduces the foundations of Australian climate-related financial reporting under AASB S2, including its relationship with the international IFRS S2 framework.

Corporate participants will explore:

  • Governance: the roles of boards and management, decision ownership and integration with enterprise risk.
  • Strategy and resilience: how physical and transition risks affect the business model, operations and value chain, and how scenarios inform the response.
  • Financial implications: connecting climate impacts and adaptation choices with financial planning and capital allocation.
  • Metrics and targets: understanding emissions scopes, exposure and resilience indicators, and progress against organisational commitments.
  • Reporting evidence: identifying data owners, recording assumptions and judgements, and maintaining documentation that supports review and assurance.

These foundations help teams connect the work of climate specialists, operational managers, finance staff and reporting advisers.

The course develops practical understanding and the ability to contribute to this work. Formal reporting and compliance obligations require their own evidence, assessment and review.

Artificial intelligence for climate risk and adaptation

An introduction to AI is built into the course, connecting the technology with the climate and adaptation questions participants work on.

You will explore applications such as:

  • Reviewing and organising climate research, guidance and organisational documents.
  • Extracting information and identifying gaps in available evidence.
  • Using machine learning to analyse patterns in environmental and asset data.
  • Supporting the preparation of adaptation options, comparisons and communication materials.
  • Assisting with repeatable tasks in risk assessment and reporting workflows.

Demonstrations will distinguish between generative AI, data analysis and predictive modelling. You will learn what to check before using an output, including source accuracy, data quality, uncertainty, confidentiality and the need for expert review.

AI is introduced on Day 1 and revisited through applied examples on Day 3. No programming experience is required.

  • Dr Marcello Sano

    Founder and instructor, Apter

    Marcello is an environmental scientist with around 20 years of experience across climate risk, coastal systems, hazards and adaptation. His work spans research, government and international practice, with a focus on connecting evidence with practical decisions. He also works on applications of artificial intelligence and machine learning to climate-risk assessment and decision support.

Questions

Do I need a climate background?
No specialist climate background is required. The course introduces the foundations and connects them to the decisions you make or support in your role.
Should I bring a case?
Yes, if you can. Day 3 uses your own case to draft the Decision Brief. A real asset, service, site or organisational question from your work is enough.
Does this cover climate reporting?
The course considers reporting where it is relevant to risk governance and adaptation decisions. It is not a reporting-compliance course. The Decision Brief is a learning output, not a formal assessment or evidence that your organisation has met its reporting obligations.
Where does the adaptation field day go?
Sites are confirmed closer to the course and are not published yet. Potential field themes include flooding and stormwater, heat and urban form, transport and critical infrastructure, water and service resilience, and built assets. The final selection depends on site and host availability.
What does a live-stream seat include?
Days 1 and 3 as they run, the course materials and a certificate. Day 2 is in the field and cannot be streamed.
Can my organisation pay by invoice or purchase order?
Yes. Pay by card at checkout, or use the purchase order request page and we will raise a tax invoice. Finance teams that prefer email can write to admin@apter.au. A tax invoice is provided either way, and there is no booking fee.
How does the group rate work?
Three or more people from one organisation registering for the same course can use the group rate. It is calculated as 5% off the current early-bird or standard price, then rounded down to the nearest $5. Select the group option for each eligible participant. It applies to in-person and live-stream places where offered, but cannot be combined with pathway pricing or another discount.
What if I cannot attend after registering?
Contact admin@apter.au as soon as you know. A suitable colleague can usually take your place at no additional cost if you notify us before the course starts. Under our terms, cancellations more than 21 days before the course may receive a refund less non-recoverable fees or committed costs. Between 8 and 21 days, a transfer or credit may be offered, but a refund is not guaranteed. Refunds are generally unavailable within 7 days. What if Apter postpones or cancels the course?
Every course runs subject to minimum enrolment. If Apter postpones or cancels, you choose a full refund or a transfer to the next course. Please wait until we confirm in writing that the course will proceed before booking non-refundable travel or accommodation.
Do I get a certificate?
Yes. After the course you receive a Certificate of Completion with a credential ID and a permanent verification link on apter.au, which you can add to LinkedIn from the email. It states the structured learning hours for the course. Your professional body determines whether and how these hours count towards its CPD requirements.
Where is the venue?
In Brisbane. The venue is confirmed to registered participants before the course.
