Why this course

AI tools can summarise climate projections, draft parts of a risk assessment and sort through disclosure requirements in minutes. They also write fluent text that is wrong, and climate decisions shape assets and communities for decades.

This course is about using AI on climate risk and adaptation work with care. Over two days you learn what current tools can and cannot do, see examples from climate practice and work on a real problem you bring from your own job.

You design a solution with a small group of peers who face the same constraints: approved tools, data rules and public scrutiny. You leave with that design and three checks to apply before anyone acts on an AI output.

Who it is for

The course is for people who assess climate risk, plan adaptation or report on it, including:

  • Climate risk and adaptation officers in councils and state agencies
  • Sustainability and disclosure teams in government and business
  • Consultants and analysts who assess climate risk
  • Infrastructure and asset managers planning for a changing climate

No programming or AI experience is needed. Bring a real problem from your work and your knowledge of where it gets stuck.

Problems participants bring

Most problems sit in the daily work of climate risk and adaptation. Examples include:

  • Drafting sections of a climate risk assessment from existing studies
  • Explaining climate projections to a local audience
  • Preparing material for climate-related financial disclosure
  • Screening assets against hazard and climate data
  • Comparing adaptation options for a site or a service
  • Tracking actions across an adaptation plan

You do not need a proposed solution. Part of the course is working out which approach is worth trying.

What you will be able to do

  1. Explain what current AI tools can and cannot do with climate data, scenarios and disclosure.
  2. Describe a climate risk and adaptation problem from your own work in a form an AI tool can help with.
  3. Design an AI-assisted workflow for that problem within your organisation's approved tools and data rules.
  4. Check an AI output for quality, traceability and safety before anyone acts on it.
  5. Decide which steps in a climate risk and adaptation process can use AI and where a person must decide.
  6. Plan the next step for testing your design in your organisation.

What you take back

  • A clear view of what AI can and cannot do in climate risk and adaptation work
  • A designed solution for a real problem from your job
  • The three checks, applied to your own design
  • A take-home guide on where AI fits and where a person must decide

How far each design gets depends on the problem, the data and the tools your organisation allows.

Programme

  1. Day 1

    Understanding and working with AI

Learn what current AI can do, see it applied to climate risk and adaptation and define the problem you will work on.

    • What generative AI, machine learning and agents are, and where they fail
    • AI in climate risk and adaptation: data, scenarios, disclosure and decisions
    • Defining your problem: the outcome, the process, the data and the constraints
    • Working on problems with peers in breakout rooms
    • Reporting back, and a demonstration of building a use case
  2. Day 2

Designing a solution you can defend

Move from tools to systems, design your solution and test it against the three checks.

    • Agentic AI: systems that plan and act, and how to restrain them
    • People and AI working together: who decides, and when
    • What is coming from research, and what is ready now
    • Designing your solution in breakout rooms
    • Presenting your design and testing it against the three checks
    • Where to from here in your organisation

Mornings are mostly teaching and demonstrations. Afternoons are practical work in small breakout rooms.

Three checks before anyone acts on AI

  • Quality: Is the output good enough for this decision?
  • Traceability: Can we show how it was made?
  • Safety: Is our data safe, and is the AI agent restrained?
  • Apter Intelligence: On day two, a pilot of Apter Intelligence scores the work against these checks, so you see them applied to your own design.

Instructors

  • Dr Marcello Sano

    Founder and instructor, Apter

  • Course materials and a take-home guide
  • Certificate of Completion

Questions

How does the online format work?
The course runs live on video over two days, from 10:00am to 2:30pm Sydney time, with a lunch break. You work in small breakout rooms with other participants. Joining details are sent before the course.
What do I need to bring?
A computer with a camera and microphone, and a real problem from your work. Before the course we ask you to describe the problem, what makes it hard and what a useful result would look like.
My organisation only allows certain AI tools. Can I still take part?
Yes. You design your solution with the tools your organisation approves, often Microsoft Copilot. The demonstrations show several tools so you can see what each one can do.
My problem involves sensitive material. Can I still work on it?
Yes. Describe the problem without confidential details and use anonymised or sample data. Only use material you are authorised to share. You and your organisation keep ownership of what you bring.
Do I need technical skills?
No. The course explains the technology in plain terms and the practical work is guided. Your knowledge of your own work matters more.
How many people take part?
The group is kept small so that everyone has time on their own problem.
Can my organisation pay by invoice or purchase order?
Yes. You can pay by card at checkout, submit a purchase order request or email admin@apter.au to arrange an invoice. A tax invoice is provided for your booking, and there is no booking fee.
How does the group rate work?
Three or more people from the same organisation registering for this course can use the group rate. It is 5% off the current individual price, rounded down to the nearest $5, and is available during both the early-bird and standard booking periods. Select the group ticket for each person.
What if I cannot attend after registering?
You can send a colleague in your place at no cost if you let us know before the course starts. Cancellation arrangements are set out in our terms: a refund less any non-recoverable costs more than 21 days before the course, a transfer or credit between 8 and 21 days before, and no refund in the final 7 days.
What if Apter postpones or cancels the course?
The course runs subject to minimum enrolment. If Apter postpones or cancels it, you can choose a full refund or a transfer to the next course.
Do I get a certificate?
Yes. After completing the course, you receive a Certificate of Completion with a credential ID, a verification link on apter.au and the structured learning hours for the course. You can add the credential to LinkedIn. Recognition towards professional development requirements depends on your professional body's rules.
I have accessibility requirements. Who should I contact?
Please email admin@apter.au as early as possible so we can discuss your needs and make arrangements.

What practitioners say

The most rewarding part was engaging with the other participants. I came away understanding coastal hazards from perspectives beyond my own, and seeing the range of solutions to erosion and inundation being applied across Australia.
Dr Paul BiermanBureau of Meteorology
I brought my own case to the AI session and built an agent to manage my email. I have been using it ever since, and I am now looking at whether AI can help with a coastal problem too.
Sophie BarrettCairns Regional Council, Queensland
A really worthwhile course. Working through coastal resilience in a practical way, alongside people from right across the coastal space, gave me perspectives I had not had before. I have already found myself drawing on those discussions in my own work.
Abby BernathCity of Gold Coast, Queensland
We were deeply impressed by this comprehensive and practical course. It provided essential knowledge that we hope to implement in our national forecasting strategies. Thank you for your valuable guidance and support.
Tom NatickMinistry of Climate Change, Vanuatu
A highly useful introduction to coastal processes and the options for erosion mitigation. Experienced professionals and real case studies made the basics of coastline management clear. I would strongly recommend it to anyone building their knowledge of how the coastal sector works in practice.
David GarradBundaberg Regional Council, Queensland
An incredibly rewarding experience. The course gave me valuable knowledge, meaningful connections and a fresh perspective that I will carry forward in my work and beyond. If you have the opportunity, I would absolutely encourage you to do it.
Carla OmeleyWollongong City Council, New South Wales
The AI session was particularly interesting and beneficial. I had not realised how many applications AI could have, or its potential for both administrative and complex tasks. I am now using it in everyday work and in drone mapping.
